Art Deco, short for the French Arts décoratifs (lit. 'Decorative Arts'),[1] is a style of visual arts, architecture, and product design, that first appeared in Paris in the 1910s (just before World War I),[2] and flourished in the United States and Europe during the 1920s to early 1930s. In New York, the Empire State Building, Chrysler Building, and other buildings from the 1920s and 1930s are monuments to the style.

    HISTORIC SIGNIFICANCE:

Art Deco emerged in the 1920s and 1930s as a bold celebration of modernity, craftsmanship, and luxury. First showcased at the 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes in Paris, the style quickly spread across Europe and the United States—shaping architecture, interiors, and industrial design.

Defined by clean geometry, symmetrical patterns, and rich materials, Art Deco reflected the optimism of the Machine Age. In cities like New York, Miami, and Los Angeles, it became synonymous with glamour—seen in iconic buildings, theaters, and hotels that embraced sleek lines, metallic finishes, and dramatic lighting.

Hollywood played a major role in popularizing the style, embedding Art Deco into the golden age of cinema. From grand movie palaces to luxury interiors, the aesthetic conveyed sophistication, progress, and escapism.

Today, Art Deco remains a timeless design language—blending vintage elegance with modern clarity. At Flamsted, our Hollywood Deco exit signs draw directly from this legacy, reinterpreting classic forms with contemporary materials to create code-compliant signage that feels both iconic and refined.
