    Additional History:

Charles Eames Jr. and Ray Eames, an American married couple of industrial designers, made huge contributions to modern architecture and furniture through the Eames Office. They worked in industrial, graphic, fine art, and film design. Charles was the public face, while Ray and Charles collaborated as creative partners with a team of talented individuals. Their most famous designs include the Eames Lounge Chair and Dining Chair.

In late 1941, the Eameses came up with a lightweight, stack-able, and super supportive leg splint for wounded soldiers during World War II. They used a mold from Charles’s leg to try out their bent-plywood experiments on splints. The Eameses made their splints from wood veneers stuck together with resin glue and shaped into compound curves using heat and pressure. Plywood splints replaced the old metal traction splints that caused gangrene because blood couldn’t get to the affected area. The US navy gave Charles and Ray money to experiment more with furniture designs and make them in large quantities.
