The International Style emerged in the 1920s and 1930s as a defining movement in modern architecture, emphasizing simplicity, functionality, and the absence of ornament. In 1932, architects and historians Philip Johnson and Henry-Russell Hitchcock formally introduced the term in their landmark exhibition and book The International Style at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Their work helped define the movement’s core principles—volume over mass, regularity over symmetry, and the elimination of applied decoration—bringing European modernism to a broader American audience.

Iconic buildings like Johnson’s Glass House exemplified this approach, blending transparency, structure, and minimalism into a new architectural language that would shape offices, homes, and public spaces throughout the 20th century.
